Jorrell Yazzie Arrested after Fatal DUI Incident near Ray Road

CHANDLER, AZ (June 30, 2023) – Early Monday morning, officers were dispatched to a deadly DUI incident that claimed the life of Chon Tran. The incident occurred on May 29th, just before 1:30 a.m., near the intersection of Dobson Road and Ray Road. According to authorities, a 2014 Dodge Avenger driven by 29-year-old Jorrell Yazzie, a Chevrolet Camaro driven by 43-year-old Maurice Owens, and a Toyota Camry driven by 68-year-old Chon Tran were involved in the collision. Upon investigation, the officers reported that Yazzie, in the Chevrolet, was traveling northbound when he rear-ended Owens, in the Camaro. The collision caused the Chevrolet to veer to the southbound lanes and struck Tran, in the Camry. As a result, Owens suffered multiple broken bones and cuts. Medics transported him to a local hospital in critical condition. Additionally, Tran suffered extreme injuries. Medics also transported Tran to a local hospital and there, succumbed to her injuries. Meanwhile, the deputies assessed Yazzie and he was determined to have exceeded three times the alcohol limit. Consequently, first responders treated Yazzie for minor injuries. Later, police arrested him and booked him into Gilbert-Chandler Unified jail for DUI, Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault charges.
