Los Angeles Police Department detectives are investigating the gang-related shooting death of a 15-year-old boy March 8. Chesar Diaz of Van Nuys was riding a bicycle in Pacoima with his 16-year-old companion when he was shot. His friend was wounded in the attack.

The shooting occurred around 6:44 p.m. Monday, when the two boys were riding their bicycles in the 11200 block of Dronfield Avenue, near Van Nuys Boulevard. According to police reports, a black vehicle pulled up next to the boys and somebody asked them “where are you from?,” and then began firing.

Diaz was transported to the hospital where he died of his injuries. His 16-year-old friend is in the hospital in stable condition. Police do not believe the boys were gang members.
