It’s not unusual to hear of a teacher losing their job thanks to an OnlyFans account here in the United States. But it seems to becoming more of an issue in Italy these days as well. Recently 29-year-old Elena Maraga lost her job as a teacher at a Catholic school after her OnlyFans account was revealed.

Maraga worked in the infant room at the private Catholic school for five years, struggling to get by. Teachers like Maraga in Italy typically earn around €1,300 a month, which isn’t enough for most to live on. The teacher-turned-OnlyFans model still lives with her parents in northern Italy near Treviso, and turned to OnlyFans as a way to try to increase her income by selling explicit photos and videos of herself.

Maraga opened up about the decision recently: “I love teaching children, it’s my calling. But I earn much more on the Internet. I opened OnlyFans a month ago, partly for fun, partly out of curiosity, partly to see if you could really earn money. In one day I get a month’s salary.”

Some parents understand her plight, praising her fantastic work with their children. They support her claim that what she does in her free time. As Maraga said in an interview, it “does no harm to anyone … people should be allowed to do what they like in their private lives. I am not ashamed of what I do.”

But not everyone agrees. Many parents were upset by the revelation, claiming that a woman who sells explicit adult content shouldn’t be allowed to teach children. The school also reacted swiftly, suspending the teacher. The school claimed that her behaviour was not in line with their religious values — though no word about what will happen to the parent who only found out about the teacher’s extracurricular activities after finding her explicit content online. One would think that kind of behaviour wouldn’t align with the school either.

One social media user wondered the same thing in the comment section: “What she does after hours is her business. Maybe the dad should look at himself. People in glass houses.”

Regardless of how the information was made public, Maraga is now in the spotlight for her account. And the Italian government is taking notice. Government officials have indicated that they will create a new code of ethics for teachers. This new code will prohibit teachers from using sites like OnlyFans, requiring teachers to “avoid statements, images or behavior that could damage the prestige and reputation” of their schools.

But for now, no such code exists. That’s why Maraga insists she should not be forced from her job. Even if her parents don’t approve of her OnlyFans account, she insists that “at almost 30 I can make the choices I want.” However, she is not collecting signatures to avoid being fired as is being reported by some.

Instead, she is focusing on her future. And that includes her body and her OnlyFans account, now that she has been suspended from teaching. “My body is the result of hard work in bodybuilding, I think it is right to enhance it, even economically,’ she explained.
