Child abuse remains one of the most distressing and pervasive issues in society. Unfortunately, it’s treated as a taboo topic. This reluctance to address child abuse leads to lacking protection of vulnerable children. High-profile cases, such as the recurring news about religious figures molesting children, highlight the issue’s gravity.
Renee Johnson, the founder of Paving Pathways Consultant Services, asserts that the stigma and fear surrounding the discussion of child abuse prevents victims from seeking help. Many children suffer in silence—their cries for help are unheard. This scenario perpetuates a cycle of abuse and neglect, leading to long-term psychological and social repercussions that can last generations.
Acknowledging this reality, Johnson made it her mission to bring the persistent issue of child abuse to public consciousness. This motivation to support children who have suffered mental, emotional, physical, sexual, and social abuse, as well as those who have been neglected, is deeply personal. Her experiences with abuse have influenced her desire to shine a light on and educate others about the early warning signs of child abuse and support those affected.
The resilient woman grew up in foster care after losing both parents by the age of 10 years old. Here she endured regular beatings, harsh verbal assaults, and an environment of constant fear and instability. These experiences left lasting scars that have shaped her understanding of abuse.
Renee married at a young age, thinking doing so would help her escape an abusive life. Her marriage didn’t bring the relief she had hoped for. Her husband, who initially appeared loving and supportive, soon revealed his own abusive tendencies. She then found herself trapped in another cycle of abuse.
Renee’s children also became victims of abuse at the hands of their father. The signs of abuse were subtle at first. “I noticed the children becoming withdrawn,” she recalls. “Their school performance declined, and they suddenly became aggressive.” Once Renee recognized these signs, she sought help, but the facade her husband presented to the outside world made it difficult for others to believe her. The man also isolated her from her support network, making it more challenging for her to seek help.
The mother’s determination to protect her children intensified. She eventually gathered enough evidence that could potentially put him behind bars. Renee then pursued education to better understand and address child abuse. She earned degrees and certifications from prestigious institutions such as Capella University, where she achieved a Master’s in Human Services, with a specialization in social and community affairs relative to abuse. At Youngstown State University, Johnson earned a Bachelors in Sociology and Psychology at the highest Honors. At Harvard University, she earned a certification in Child Protection Rights. She is also a US-certified Human Rights Consultant. Renee excelled academically, even earning accolades such as the Ambassador of Peace Award for Interracial & Interreligious Community Affairs and recognition from the Golden Key National Honor Society. She also studied at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute and became a certified Hypnotherapist. Johnson achieved a certificate as a Functional Behavioral Assessor from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Resources.
The passionate woman also founded Paving Pathways Consultant Services, utilizing her advanced studies in etiology and ramifications of child abuse to develop and implement youth programs. Her work focuses on inner-city at-risk youth, teen parenting, and behavior modification plans for youth with atypical social-emotional behaviors.
Renee employs a holistic approach to integrating multi-agency involvement and systemic social programming to empower children and their parents, siblings, educators, and clinicians. She introduces the Family Preservation Model, championing a comprehensive assessment and support system to address all aspects of a child’s development and well-being.
Her numerous volunteer roles and professional memberships reflect her dedication to the cause. Renee has served on various committees and boards, including the North Eastern Ohio Domestic Violence Legal Unit and the Cobb County, Georgia, YWCA Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Committee.
Through her lived experiences, studies, and extensive research, Renee gained valuable insights into the different types of child abuse. She incorporated these insights in her book, Zada’s Story: Battles and Blessings. Based on real-life events, it’s a raw, heartfelt account of the abuse she and her family endured, providing readers with a closer look at different forms of abuse.
Here, the author reveals incidents of physical abuse, including child abuse and domestic violence. She also delves into the critical issue of sexual abuse, detailing its long-term adverse effects and the atypical behaviors that result from such trauma. Zada’s Story: Battles and Blessings delineates the differences between physical and emotional abuse, showing how each form is recognized and perpetuated. These sometimes involve what could be interpreted as demonic or cult practices.
Zada’s Story: Battles and Blessings is only the beginning of a series of books Renee plans to write. Following this, she intends to release individual books about her children’s journey, illustrating how the abuse impacted their lives in diverse ways.
Renee’s efforts demonstrate the urgent need for society to confront child abuse openly, “I hope that by raising awareness and advocating for support systems, I can contribute to breaking the cycle of abuse and provide young victims with the opportunities and support they need to thrive,” she remarks.
Ultimately, child abuse is a critical issue that requires immediate attention and action from the mental health community as well as legal authorities. Renee Johnson’s efforts to bring this topic to light and her dedication to helping abused youth show how society can begin to address this problem.
