In honor of this week's 'Best of Los Angeles' issue, West Coast Sound is offering a week's worth of items that haven't been included in the print issue. Expect a string of additional Bests throughout the week.

Mt. Washington-based Shafiq Husayn has an extremely rich history of hip-hop (etc.) production work both in and outside of this city, both with his well-established crew Sa-Ra Creative Partners and on his own. Among the chronologically deepest names on his resume is Ice T, for Husayn's work on 1991's O.G. Original Gangsta. More recently, he co-produced Erykah Badu's New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), and released a solid vinyl-only solo EP on Pasadena's always great Poo-Bah Records.

Better yet, Husayn's releasing his full-length debut, En-A-Free-Ka on Plug Research next week (October 6), and the label's put together a pretty comprehensive podcast in honor of that overdue milestone. Actually, KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad put the mix together, technically, and you can download it after the jump, where you'll find a track listing as well. Included are songs from the upcoming LP, as well as examples of Husayn's work with Badu, John Legend, Jurassic 5, Jill Scott, Pharoahe Monch, Bilal and others.

Stream the “Shafiq Edition” podcast via Soundcloud, or download it via zShare.
