Though from the outside it meets common rehearsal-complex criteria — numb with anonymity and occupying an obscure urban armpit near railway tracks — ABC Rehearsal Studios in Glassell Park is, in fact, a rarity. Unlike most such facilities, this former business park is family-run and actually owns its land and buildings, which has encouraged its hefty investment (including adding 40 new rooms, for a total of 110, in 2010). Rentals here range from cell-like drum rooms to airy, 18-by-20-foot suites with lofts. Many of these 24/7-access “lockouts” have become long-term occupants' decorated and personalized homes-away-from-home. Thousands of bands, dreamers and living-the-dream alike, have inhabited ABC since it opened in 1992, including Rage Against the Machine, The Pixies, System of a Down and, lately, Silversun Pickups, Autolux and Ozomatli. 2575 N.
