Democratic Attorney and Montebello school board member Ed Chau was able to stave of an upset by Republican Dr. Matthew Lin last night. Chau beat his opponent in the race to represent voters of newly-drawn Assembly District 49 by a healthy margin.

As the Weekly previously reported, Lin earned 52.2% of the primary vote in June, to Chau's 34.9%. Those numbers had some Republican strategists thinking Lin could be on track to become the first member of the GOP elected in the San Gabriel Valley in decades…but those hopes were dashed last night when voters in majority Asian-American district chose Chau over Lin by a double- digit margin.

Chau and Lin will face each other at least one more time–in court on Nov. 27, when they will have to settle a dispute over the alleged distribution of Lin's wife's Social Security number in commercials produced by the Chau campaign.
