Ammo's Sunday Roast dinners mean different things to different people: you might go for chef Daniel Mattern's good food, for the 10 year-old restaurant's casual setting, for a good value — usually three courses for $32 — or for pastry chef Roxana Jullapat's remarkable desserts. You might also go for the books. Yes, books, as the restaurant occasionally hosts book signings.
This Sunday, August 8th, Ammo will host Paul Greenberg's only Los Angeles book signing, after which the author of Four Fish: the Future of the Last Wild Food will himself stay for dinner (fish, unsurprisingly) and be available to talk shop with diners.
In his new book, Greenberg discusses the future of the fishing industry by focusing on the four species of fish (salmon, bass, cod and tuna) that most frequently turn up on our plates. On Ammo's dinner menu: Carlsbad oysters on the half-shell; Kona kampachi crudo with avocado and chile; oven-roasted mussels and clams with summer shell beans and fennel; hot-smoked Arctic char with cucumber and tomato salad; grilled barramundi with eggplant caponata; and, for dessert, roasted figs with honey ice cream. And if you want to know why you're eating what you're eating, you can ask not only the chefs but your (then) resident seafood expert.
Greenberg will sign books, which will be for sale at the restaurant, during a cocktail hour on the patio from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.; dinner will be from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Reservations are recommended. The four course dinner is $50.
