A new kind of creator is emerging across the global arts landscape, one who blends artistry with leadership, performance with strategy, and inspiration with execution. Among those redefining this movement are artists who lead with joy and purpose. One of them is Alvaro Montelongo, an international contemporary ballet artist and creative leader whose work spans four continents, major productions, and powerful community-building initiatives.
“I don’t believe that excellence requires suffering,” Montelongo says. “Joy is a strategy. When you operate from peace, trust, and love, your performance reaches another level.”
Montelongo, a Mexican dance leader raised in Guadalajara, built his career through classical training, global touring, and creative leadership. His performances with Disney’s The Lion King in Madrid, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and in major venues like Lincoln Center and Jacob’s Pillow define his reputation as an artist with both precision and presence. But his vision goes beyond the stage.
Movement Meets Leadership
Montelongo believes creativity needs structure, connection, and strategy. “I come from a family of entrepreneurs,” he says. “I learned that if you want something to exist, you don’t wait; you build it.” That belief inspired him to design professional ecosystems that give artists autonomy and long-term sustainability.
“I don’t want to just perform in great spaces. I want to create the systems where artists can thrive,” he explains. “We don’t need saviors. We have the capacity to make anything happen.”
He now leads a global development initiative and is expanding his business knowledge through coursework at London Business School. His projects, including ROOTED, JOYA Micro Concerts, and self-produced choreographic works, reflect Montelongo’s vision of connecting performance, business, and community impact.
The Entrepreneurial Artist
Montelongo defines himself as an entrepreneurial artist. He blends expressive movement with strategic thinking: “We’ve been trained to think someone will discover us, but real power is when you discover yourself.”
His leadership focuses on moving artists from dependence to agency. “We don’t need to wear capes,” he shares. “People don’t want perfection. They want honesty. They want YOU.”
This mindset guides Montelongo’s teaching, choreography, and mentorship. He encourages artists to embrace what he calls the discipline of enjoyment. “Excellence and ease can coexist,” he explains. “Joy doesn’t weaken you; it strengthens your focus, recovery, and connection.”

Montelongo’s multicultural upbringing shaped his natural adaptability. He lived in France and Canada during his youth and trained across the United States and Mexico. By doing so, he developed a unique artistic identity he calls “fire mixed with light.”
“I move between worlds, between ballet, contemporary, musical theater, and leadership,” he says. “I don’t believe we have to choose one box. If something calls you, go for it. It is probably a great gift to everyone around you.”
His mindful movement approach emphasizes internal awareness and long-term sustainability. “Sustainability in dance is not just physical. It’s emotional, relational, and spiritual.”
The Future: Building Spaces for Artistic Truth
Montelongo sees his next performance years as research. It’s learning how elite institutions operate so he can build new models. “My long-term goal is to create spaces where artists can discover their superpowers and collaborate to serve humanity,” he explains. “I’m not just building choreography. I’m building ecosystems.”
On Instagram, Montelongo shares glimpses of his work in arts innovation, his high-performance mindset, and his cross-cultural approach to arts leadership. He invites audiences to see artistry through a lens of freedom, intelligence, and joy.
“Artists are not meant to survive,” he says. “We’re meant to bloom.”
