Football announcer Al Michaels committed a major foul over the weekend.

At least according to Santa Monica police, who stopped him in a dicier part of town and soon discovered, they say, that the NBC Sunday Night Football caller was drunk behind the wheel.

It all happened …

… Friday at 9:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis told us. That's the Pico 'hood to Santa Monicans — home to vice and gangs. Not that we're suggesting anything.

Michaels was in a Mercedes convertible headed east from Lincoln Boulevard when he allegedly made an illegal u-turn, Lewis said.

(You can't make u-turns in so-called “business districts,” though your average citizen would be hard-pressed to figure out when such a district begins and ends. So that's an easy ticket.)

Cops on motorcycles pulled him over, “observed signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication present,” and conducted a field sobriety test, after which Michaels was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to Lewis.

A breathalyzer test was conducted, and while police would not release Michaels' exact results, suffice it to say he allegedly blew greater than the California limit of .08, Lewis said.

The suspect was “released on citation” six hours later and given a court date of June 26, Lewis said.

The sergeant said that, despite being flagged allegedly out-of-bounds, that Michaels was “cooperative.”
