In a town as quaint as Marshfield, Massachusetts, secrets are meant to stay hidden, but retired detective Jean-Baptiste “Gator” Perriloux isn’t one to let them lie. In The Perriloux Mysteries, the first in a thrilling new series by L.M. Loyd, readers are thrust into the world of a private investigator who takes on the case of a young woman desperate for answers. Her parents’ deaths, ruled as a murder-suicide by the police, hide more than meets the eye. Gator’s relentless pursuit of justice leads him through a labyrinth of lies, deception, and danger in this gripping crime novel.
The story begins with Gator, a retired Marshfield police detective turned private investigator, being approached by a college student whose parents’ tragic deaths raise too many unanswered questions. While the local authorities have closed the case, labeling it a murder-suicide, the daughter believes otherwise. With nothing but a hunch and a lot of determination, Gator dives deep into the murky waters of small-town secrets.
The investigation isn’t just a professional pursuit—it’s personal. Loyd’s storytelling paints Gator as a man with a rugged exterior but a keen sense of justice. Readers are taken on a roller-coaster ride as he battles corrupt systems, uncovers hidden motives, and unravels a web of deceit that threatens to shake Marshfield to its core.
Loyd’s portrayal of Marshfield is vivid, almost as if the town itself is a character in the story. The cozy fishing village-turned-summer-retreat hides a darker side beneath its picturesque charm. The contrast between its serene facade and the turbulent undercurrent of crime makes it the perfect backdrop for Gator’s journey.
Gator Perriloux isn’t your average detective. With a rough past and a straightforward approach, he represents the gritty determination of someone who’s seen it all but refuses to give up. His methods may be unorthodox, and his humor sharp, but his heart is in the right place. Through Gator, Loyd explores themes of loyalty, the pursuit of justice, and the human cost of uncovering the truth.
