The deputy, identified as 45-year-old Alejandro Diaz, was allegedly armed and fired shots at the course. Diaz was treated on-scene after the shooting, then transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The “lethal force encounter,” as San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department described it, is being investigated by its Specialized Investigations Division, in collaboration with LASD and Fontana PD.
“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is deeply saddened to hear of the tragic shooting incident involving our off-duty deputy who passed away yesterday,” LASD said in a statement.
An autopsy will also be conducted to establish a cause of death.
