If you’re looking to add a little life to your home, there’s no better way to do it than by picking up a few house plants. Not only do they look great, but studies have shown that keeping plants in your home can improve your mood, boost your productivity, and purify the air around you. Plus, taking care of a plant is a great way to learn responsibility and hone your green thumb. If you’re new to the plant world, don’t worry! Caring for house plants is easier than you might think. To help you get started, we’ve put together a list of five tips for taking care of house plants.

1. Choose the right plant for your space.

When you’re picking out a plant, it’s important to consider both the size of the pot it will need and the amount of light it will require. Some plants need full sun while others prefer low-light conditions, so be sure to do your research before making a purchase. Once you’ve found the perfect plant, make sure to transfer it to a pot that has drainage holes so that excess water can escape.

2. Water your plants regularly—but don’t overwater them!

One of the most common mistakes new plant parents make is watering their plants too much. While all plants need water to survive, giving them too much can actually do more harm than good. When you water your plants, be sure to check the soil first—if it’s still moist from your last watering, hold off until it has had a chance to dry out somewhat. Over time, you’ll get a feel for how often your particular plant needs to be watered. Just be sure not to let the soil completely dry out, as this can stress and even kill your plant.

3. Feed your plants with fertilizer.

Fertilizer helps provide nutrients that are essential for healthy growth. While some plants don’t need fertilizer or only need it once a year, others may benefit from being fertilized every month or so. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and fertilize less rather than more—it’s easy to add more if needed but difficult to remove excess fertilizer if you’ve given your plant too much.

4. Prune your plants when necessary.

Pruning is an important part of taking care of houseplants, as it helps encourage new growth and keeps them looking their best. When pruning, be sure to use clean sharp scissors or pruning shears and make cuts at a 45-degree angle just above a leaf node (the point where leaves attach to the stem). If you’re not sure how or when to prune your particular plant, doing a quick Google search should give you all the info you need.

5. And one of the less known tips for taking care of house plants: Check for pests and diseases regularly.

Just like any other living thing, plants are susceptible to pests and diseases—though luckily there are plenty of products available to help treat these problems if they should arise. Once every week or two, take a close look at your plant’s leaves and stems for signs of pests such as Aphids or Mealybugs (look for small bumps or white powdery substance). If you see any suspicious spots on your plant’s leaves, isolate the affected plant immediately and consult an expert about how best to proceed. Catching problems early is key to preventing them from spreading throughout your entire collection of houseplants!
