Curbed L.A. had been wondering aloud if the furniture went with the Lloyd Wright-designed Bird of Paradise House, when the 1963 Palos Verdes pad (aka the Bowler House) was sold last January. Curbed discovered the furniture did not — and will be auctioned tomorrow by Bonhams & Butterfields. Pieces include “the hexagonal walnut dining table (est. $3,000/5,000), twelve velvet and brass dining chairs (est. $2,500/3,500), pairs of club chairs, and an ottoman (est. $1,500/2,500); as well as various side tables and coffee tables.”
The house, Curbed says, sold for $605 Gs under the asking price of $2.5 million and we've got to wonder if, too, the furniture is arriving on the block under a double whammy of bad timing — recession and end of the Mid Century craze, you know. How badly, after all, do people want used furniture when they may not have a place to live?
