It's a rare occasion indeed when Heaven and Hell get together for a night of celebration, but that's what's happening downtown this Saturday night. Representing Hell is The Hive Gallery, with their show “Hell Versus the Monster Mash.” A couple of doors over is the gallery Temple of Visions, with “Heavenly” as its theme. (“Let's consider the sidewalk connecting the two galleries to be purgatory,” Nathan Cartwright of the Hive Gallery, says.) There will be more than 100 works of art on display between the two galleries. You can imagine the multitude of interpretations that will be displayed depicting Heaven and Hell. One of the Heavenly artists, Nature Dreamweaver (his real name is Sol Lipshitz — just kidding!) says, “I believe the highest order of art is to create beauty that reflects the divine love of the universe.” On the Hell side, artist Michael Carbonaro says, “Every day something burns, crumbles and dies. I admire it and take note.” Another Hell artist, J. Salvador, has created art that depicts “the sad world that fast food mascots like Ronald McDonald, Jack and Colonel Sanders inhabit.” The Hell gallery will have booze; the Heavenly gallery will have vegan food and drinks. There will be performances and live painting in both galleries. The Hive Gallery will also have video art, burlesque dancers and a tarot card reader. There will be worthy offerings in both galleries, but chances are we'll be spending most of our time in Hell!

Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Oct. 2. Continues through Oct. 30, 2010
