At a press conference this morning to announce new stimulus spending, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa renewed his call for the City Council to act quickly to address next year's $485 million deficit.

Villaraigosa, who has called for 1,000 layoffs, suggested that outcome could be avoided if unions agree to take a pay cut.

He argued the public sector should not be immune from cuts, noting that some in the media have seen their pay reduced.

“I do have some inside information,” the mayor said, apparently referencing his girlfriend, KTLA reporter Lu Parker. Addressing the assembled TV crews, he said, “Some of you took a cut in pay.”

It was a sign, perhaps, of the mayor's new openness about his personal life.
