It's been slow going for condom ads on television. The first network spots appeared in 2005, and they're still somewhat of a rarity, particularly during after-school hours when teens would be exposed to them. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation states that it was rejected last year for a paid public service announcement about condoms it wanted to run on Fox's prime-time show Family Guy, too.
But on Friday the organization announced a “breakthrough” with a rare if not first-time public-service spot that will run several afternoons on The Oprah Show starting Monday (it airs at 3 p.m. on ABC7 in Los Angeles).
Oh yeah, and Family Guy accepted the same spot (video after the jump), to run 9 p.m. Nov. 21.
AHF spokesman Ged Kenslea told the Weekly that “this is new ground in the afternoon on a show as sort of apple pie as Oprah. On that particular program we'll catch moms and kids as well.”
The group's president, Michael Weinstein, stated:
“Oprah has been a leader in examining evolving boundaries in society and she's been willing to challenge the status quo both on her program and in her life. It is an honor for us that her viewers will be among the first to see this important public health message which unfolds as a snapshot of conversation between a father and son.”
So, here's the thing: Do you want kids learning about Jimmies in the afternoon?
