You were a suspect in a previous, “major cocaine seizure,” and you allegedly try it again?
And this time the cops find 47 kilos and more than $2.3 million in cash on you and a co-defendant? Really? Authorities say yeah, really. The Santa Monica Police Department this week announced the arrest of Vasile Babuschin, who was under surveillance by the SMPD, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Costa Mesa police and other agencies this month.
They were looking at Babuschin as he came home to LAX from Toronto on Jan. 5, according to SMPD Sgt. Jay Trisler.
As they kept an eye on him,, authorities say they were “led” to a house in North Hollywood and a warehouse and big-rig truck in Valencia.
Authorities got three search warrants to take a look at all three spots last Wednesday and, lo and behold, claim to have found the coke and money at the warehouse.
Some of the alleged contraband was in a safe that had to be cracked open by L.A. County firefighters, according to Trisler.
After the find, another suspect, Sergei Souetov, along with Babuschin, were arrested on suspicion of narcotics violations.
Trisler says the pair were being held at SMPD's jail, and that ICE has holds on both men so they can't try to skip out.
