Operators of four West Valley charter schools were charged this week with crimes related to allegedly embezzling and misappropriating public money — what prosecutors said was a commingling of their private and public school funding. The District Attorney's office contends that Yevgeny Selivanov, 38, and his wife, Tatyana Berkovich, 32, took $200,000 through inappropriate means as they ran their Ivy Academia Charter School locations in the Valley.
Each defendant was charged with five felony counts of misappropriation of public funds, embezzlement by a public or private officer and filing a false tax return, along and one misdemeanor count of failing to file a statement of economic interests for 2008, according to the D.A.'s office.
Audits of the charter school by the the Los Angeles Unified School District's Office of the Inspector General led to the criminal complaint against the couple.
