Jamie Oliver can sleep easier now. Starting July 1st, all ground beef intended for the National School Lunch Program will be held to much higher standards. Said U.S. PIRG public health advocate Liz Hitchcock in a statement, “By raising the bar for ground beef served in schools and increasing the frequency of testing for contamination, the USDA is taking some of the mystery out of the meat on the lunch tray.”
This is a big step for the National School Lunch Program, which currently feeds over 30 million students. Said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, via USA Today, “For too long, a McDonald's hamburger has been safer for our kids than those served in some school cafeterias. I applaud the USDA for taking action today to protect millions of American schoolchildren.”
So here's our question: if we aren't giving our mystery meat to public schools or fast food restaurants anymore, where will it go? We suppose there will always be pet food, prisons, and college campuses.
