The festival-closing Coachella set by Gorillaz back in April was as memorable for what it wasn't as what it was.

The Damian Albarn-fronted collective went it without its typical big-screen animations and played unmasked — with the Clash's Mick Jones and Paul Simonon joining for a set that included guest bits from Bobby Womack, De La Soul, singer Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon and Snoop Dogg.

Gorillaz' return to southern California tonight will have some star power too — Lou Reed will join Albarn, Jamie Hewlett and crew on this stop of their Escape To Plastic Beach tour, along with Miho Hatori. Reed is expected to perform lead vocals “Some Kind Of Nature,” Hatori to guest on “19-2000” from the band's self-titled debut.

N.E.R.D. opens tonight's show at the Gibson Amphitheatre.

Also: White Sea (along with Seven Saturdays) and David Poe at the Hotel Cafe; Reigning Sound and the Ettes at Spaceland; the Nervous Wreckords and Taylor Locke & the Roughs at Bordello; Dinah Steward at the Mint; Bullet For My Valentine and Escape the Fate at the Palladium; VersaEmerge, Anarbor and the Dangerous Summer at the Troubadour; TAB the Band and Killa Kela at the Viper Room; Goodbye Elliott and Lido Beach at the Roxy; Father's Day at the Smell; Onra and Thavius Beck at Low End Theory at the Airliner; All Spots to Black and Welldiggers Banquet at the Silverlake Lounge; Playing For Change at the Wilshire Ebell; JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys at the House of Blues Anaheim; and funny stuff including “wOOtstock: An Evening of Geeks + Music with Paul and Storm” and Largo and Tim & Eric (with Neil Hamburger) at the Glass House.
