The big question on a lot of people's minds following Tiger Woods' bizarre accident over the holiday weekend was whether the golf legend would attend the annual tournament he hosts this week in Thousand Oaks. The answer came Monday in the form of a resounding 'no.'

“I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week,” Woods said via his website. “I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I'm very sorry that I can't be there.” El Tigre cited those injuries he sustained when his Cadillac Escalade sheered a fire hydrant and hit a neighbor's tree in Florida shortly before 2:30 a.m. Friday.

In that vehicle-vs.-tree crash, his wife was found standing next to him holding a golf club outside the vehicle when first-responders arrived. Speculation has swirled around an alleged affair and subsequent tiff between Woods and his hubby, but he has called the rumors “false, unfounded and malicious.”

In a statement Woods published on his site Sunday he seemed to downplay the seriousness of the incident, saying “I have some cuts, bruising and right now I'm pretty sore.” He called it a “single-car” accident and said, “This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me.”

It's interesting to see that while it's a private matter to be swatted away with one hand, Woods is using it to stay away from the media glare of Southern California with the other hand. The Chevron World Challenge starts Thursday at Sherwood Country Club. Woods has hosted the event since 1999, although he skipped play as a result of an injury last year. That boo-boo, including knee surgery, prematurely ended his 2008 season, but it didn't prevent him from at least showing his face at the Sherwood tourney last year. But this year, cuts and bruises have done him in for his own show? Hmm.

This is, after all, the place where all the “unfounded and malicious” allegations about Woods' philandering are being produced. And its the place where Rachel Uchitel, the woman reported in tabloids to have had an affair with Tiger Woods, has come to meet with attorney Gloria Allred for reasons unknown.
