The Original Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax Ave. was born in 1934, when customers pulled their cars into spaces chalked in the dirt lot then known as Gilmore Island to buy produce displayed on the tailgates of farmers' trucks. Since then, the number of vendors at the market has grown from 18 to more than 50, and snagging a parking spot in the now-paved lot has gotten proportionally more difficult.

Starting July 13, the market will be celebrating its 75th anniversary with a week-long celebration including a “Taste of the Farmers Market” event and a giant birthday cake in the shape of the market's iconic clock tower.

“The Taste of Farmers Market” event commemorates the exact date of the market's anniversary. From 5 to 9 p.m. on July 14th, visitors are invited to sample the best from almost all of the market's 36 restaurants.

Retail and grocery merchants will also offer special sales on select merchandise, and some will even drop prices to match those found at the 1934 market. Food tickets cost $20, $25 with drinks, and are available online. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the West Hollywood Food Bank.

On July 16, the festivities get even bigger–with monster cars, the USC marching band, and that much anticipated clock tower cake. As the 5' cake is actually a frosted model, and therefore inedible, BreadWorks cupcakes will be served to make sure the anniversary is celebrated right.
