Last minute gift idea: Chef Nico de Leon, owner of Lasita in Chinatown, is planning a Kamayan feast at Wattles Farm in Hollywood on Sunday, Feb. 18, as part of Outstanding in the Field. Translating to “by hand,” the traditional style of Filipino dining is defined by colorful platters, banana leaves and communal eating (usually with your hands). Nestled up against Hollywood’s Runyon Canyon is the historic hillside estate of Gordon Wattles which is now a thriving community-run garden filled with volunteer-tended plots of flowers and produce, as well as century-old citrus and avocado trees.

Mikiya, a Wagyu Shabu experience from Chubby Cattle International (the group behind LA’s Niku X and Wagyu House) has opened in Cerritos. The menu features four-tiered, all-you-can-eat options priced at $45, $55, $78 and $98, with everything from its domestically nurtured Wagyu and Australian Wagyu to the luxurious Japanese Wagyu. The restaurant also offers a curated beverage and cocktail menu featuring Asian favorites, including beer and Ginjo.
