It's here! Earlier today we announced we were premiering the new video “Fastlane” from The Internet — aka Odd Future's Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians. You can see it below. The song comes off the duo's new album Purple Naked Ladies, and on the heels of our recent cover story on Syd. (She also outted a few big name female urban artists for us.)
In any case, the video stars Syd and an actress named Jasmine Flemings, who play a murderous couple on the run. Taking cues from Natural Born Killers, the video is likely to ruffle some feathers, particularly in the lesbian media. So without further ado, here it is.
Below, read our interview with Matt Martians about the video.
How did you conceive the idea for the video?
Matt Martians: I had a very broad idea when we were making the song. I knew what type of mood and colors I wanted for the song from the beginning. I told [Odd Future manager Christian] Clancy what I had and he suggested we watch the movie Natural Born Killers, because he said the ideas were very similar. After we watched it we started to develop the core idea for the video as far as characters. We also wanted this video to play as the prequel to “Cocaine” so we had to figure out a way to tie it all together.
Where and when was it filmed?
We filmed the video two weeks ago in Lancaster in the middle of the desert.
How do you suspect people will react to it? Do you think people will find it shocking?
I think people will be shocked with how graphic it is. Especially my death and how cold Syd is about what she's doing the whole time. Everybody is afraid of a sociopath especially a cute one with a mohawk.
What was the message you, Syd, and director Matt Alonzo were trying to get across?
We want to push quality. Thats the biggest message. We want every Internet video to feel like your watching a movie.
