“The Best Gig I Ever Saw” is a weekly column that will see us ask a musician to chat about their favorite concert thus far. This week it’s Elle King, who plays with Heart and Joan Jett at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday…

When I was about 12 or 13, it was the year that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs put out Fever to Tell and I was so obsessed with that record. I listened to it backwards and forwards. I saved up my own money and I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Hammerstein Ballroom [New York]. I waited in line and I pushed my way to the front, and I saw Karen O — she was in a beaded leotard and her face was painted, and I’ve never seen anyone with so much energy on stage. The way she danced and jumped around and yelled was so influential for me as a musician. Even though I don’t necessarily play music like that, it really left a mark on me. I even screamed, ‘Karen I love you,’ and she smiled at me. That’s my favorite concert experience because I was just so moved and so enthralled by her performance. That has always stuck with me. I love her and everything she does.

Elle King performs with Heart and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 9 at the Hollywood Bowl.
