Smoked Salmon Recalled for Listeria

Put down that lox. It might be loaded — with bacteria.

A Seattle-based company is recalling 371 cases of ready-to-eat smoked salmon because the fish may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, Food Safety News reports.

Ocean Beauty Seafoods LLC issued a voluntary recall of its Nathan's Brand Cold Smoked Alaskan Salmon and LASCCO Cold Smoked Nova Atlantic Salmon last Friday after internal testing revealed Listeria in a sample. There have been no complaints or illnesses reported in association with this recall, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The products, imported from Chile, were distributed to retailers and distribution centers in California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York from Nov. 20, 2012 through Dec. 12, 2012. (Question: How did salmon labeled “Alaskan” and “Nova Atlantic” end up in Chile? That's a pretty circuitous route back to the U.S.)

The LASCCO salmon was sold in 4 oz. packages marked with UPC 0 72840 01751 7 285 96. The Nathan's brand salmon was sold in 3oz packages marked with UPC 0 73030 80368 2 285. The code dates are located in the back, top left corner of the package.

Consumers should discard any open packages of the affected product; unopened packages should be returned to their place of purchase for a refund.
