There wasn't a mass grave, as some early reports indicated, but barren desert in San Bernardino County appeared to be the final resting place for what was left of four people, cops said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner's office said late yesterday that skeletal remains of four people were found in and near two graves in the desert near Victorville:

The first report of possible remains next to the 15 freeway, near Quarry Road and north of Stoddard Wells Road, was made Monday about 10 a.m., according to Jodi Miller of the department.

Yesterday morning sheriff's and coroner's investigators began excavating and found “two graves where remains were located as well as additional skeletal remains that were located near the graves,” she said.

A third excavation site turned up no evidence, Miller said.

Detectives believe remains have been there “for an extended period of time.”

It looks like it will take awhile to figure out identities and genders, the department stated. A forensic anthropologist would be enlisted to help coroner's investigators figure out IDs, ages and genders, cops said.

Anyone with info about the graves is asked to call detectives at 909-387-3589.
