The city of Santa Monica, which apparently owns the land occupied by exotic sushi restaurant The Hump, is looking into allegations that the eatery serves exotic whale meat in violation of federal law.

Santa Monica City Attorney Marsha Moutrie told the Santa Monica City Council that the city's lease with The Hump allows it terminate the agreement in the event that the tenant commits a crime, according to the blog of Heal the Bay president Mark Gold, who was present at the meeting.

She said the City Attorney's office would investigate the allegations, made by a documentary filmmaker who apparently filmed sushi from endangered sei whales being served at the establishment. A federal inquiry, including a search of the restaurant, was initiated as a result.

Moutrie told the council she would report back on her office's findings in two weeks.
