Ten years ago, Sandy Gerber was a single mother of two toddlers and worked out of her bedroom corner desk. Tackling financial responsibility head-on, she poured herself into her career in marketing and communications. However, as she received accolades and awards in her professional life, her personal life was suffering with two failed marriages. Little did she know help would come in a dusty old book from a second-hand bookstore.

The antiquated book she found contained a study on the emotional appeal theory from the 1960s. While the terminology was unsurprisingly outdated, the theory it revealed resonated with her. “I had the eureka moment people often speak about: I realized why I had made the choices I did in my personal relationships, in my career, and even in my parenting. The book left me stunned. I immediately understood what my emotional appeals were, and I embraced them.” Applying her newfound knowledge of her emotional appeals to her life and business, she quickly experienced remarkable results. “I was able to grow my business from my bedroom into a Top 100 Fastest Growing Company in British Columbia, co-parent more successfully, and ignite an incredible new love story. ”

Writing Her Book, Emotional Magnetism

As Sandy shared her emotional appeals with people, they were excited to learn their own. She decided to make the information more accessible and simpler so people could easily assess, share, and connect better with those they love. It took eight years for her to research and write in her spare time, and in 2022, she published Emotional Magnetism: How to Communicate to Ignite Connection in Your Relationships. Just a year after the release of the book, it has won twenty book awards and is available worldwide in three languages. “Collectively we are creating a love train with this book,” she remarked. “I wrote the book to help heighten people’s self-awareness around emotional needs. I’m so happy this book is creating more love and acceptance in our world, it is badly needed.”

Gerber wrote her book, Emotional Magnetism into three parts. Part one explains how Emotional Magnets work to repel or attract people’s interest and what blocks communication. Sandy shares sixteen different communication blockers we all use that block connection. Part two of the book breaks down the Emotional Magnets in detail and how they direct our choices in life. “We all are motivated by one of four emotional needs,” Sandy says. “Safety, Achievement, Value, or Experience; and many arguments can be prevented when we understand and empathize with others’ Emotional Magnets.” Part three of her book gives the reader the opportunity to complete a quiz to learn their Emotional Magnets and provides engaging exercises to put the learning into action.
