It looks as thought the former Rivera spot will be retaining some of its Latin vibe. Ray Garcia, who left Fig in Santa Monica a little while back after many years at that restaurant, will be opening a restaurant called Broken Spanish in the Rivera location near the Staples Center. The restaurant is in partnership with Sprout, Bill Chait's restaurant group. 

According to the press release:

Broken Spanish is the synthesis of a classically trained chef, born and raised in Los Angeles, with the powerful influence of a Latin upbringing. Chef Ray Garcia will share a distinct culinary perspective on his hometown with cuisine that is expressed in bold yet refined flavors. Preparations will demonstrate elements of long-established tradition, while finished dishes are showcased with a modern sensibility. The fare is authentically inauthentic, representing a city of migrant-rich flavors through the lens of a native. From its heart, Broken Spanish will emanate a warmth that Garcia is known for, hoping to foster an atmosphere of family and community.

Garcia has been a consistent star in the world of extreme pork cookery, winning the L.A. Cochon 555 title in both 2013 and 2014, going on to become the national “King of Pork” in that competition. 

Broken Spanish is currently slated for a late spring opening.
