Among the important things you vote for — governor, mayor and sometimes taxes — will be this gem: Condoms.

All for them, personally. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, however, wants to force the gear on the porn industry, which mainly calls the city of Los Angeles its home.

With what amounts to foot-dragging by state, county and city officials when it comes to condoms on-set, the AHF has decided to take the issue directly to the people. Looks like that's gonna happen:

The organization announced this week that it has gathered enough signatures — 64,000 worth — to get the mandatory condom law considered by L.A. city voters.

The signatures — only registered voters count — still have to be verified. But AHF beat its Dec. 23 deadline by nearly a month.

If passed, the law AHF wants you to vote for “would formally condition the issuance of adult film permits by the City of Los Angeles to condom use in adult films shot and produced in Los Angeles, including collection of a fee from adult film permit recipients to allow for periodic inspections of sets in order to monitor for compliance,” according to a statement.

AHF president Michael Weinstein:

… We believe these performers deserve the health and safety protections already afforded them under existing law, and that all levels of government need to be involved in this workplace safety issue … This is why we have spearheaded this ballot initiative: so the people–the voters in Los Angeles–may decide on this important health and safety issue affecting adult film performers.

The industry has responded to AHF's drive toward mandatory condoms by warning that business could move out-of-state and even underground if performers have to don prophylactics.

Industry leaders say you, the adult consumer (you know who you are), wouldn't put up with condom porn. As it is the industry requires once-a-month negative tests from its stars.

The AHF says that's not enough. Vote for Jimmy. Or not.
