With more than 15 years of professional experience, Parthiv Varma has established himself as a seasoned Senior Project Control Analyst. His expertise in Project Management spans cost control and scheduling, as well as earned value management and change management across industries. His professional journey started in field engineering, where direct involvement with large-scale operations informed his approach to strategic project controls. Today, Varma’s work is driven by a commitment to elevate project control as a discipline shaping organizational strategy.

A Passion for Project Management

Early in his career, Varma discovered a passion for project management. As the companies he worked with were faced with complex problems, there was a growing need for clarity amid the chaos. Project controls, as a combination of analysis, strategy, and leadership, helped Varma to guide teams toward success.

“I was inspired by the opportunity to make a real difference,” Varma reflected, “to help projects stay on track, manage risks, and turn ambitious ideas into reality. Being part of the engine that keeps projects moving forward, even in the face of uncertainty, is incredibly rewarding.”

Introducing Clarity and Efficiency to Complex Areas

Fascinated with managing timelines, budgets, and resources, Varma gained an understanding of how each decision could shape the success of a project. With this insight, he can ensure efficiency and financial stability in the most complex projects. Throughout his 15-year career, spanning the oil and gas, utilities, energy, and infrastructure sectors, Varma has learned to deliver better outcomes across industries.

“My commitment to continuous improvement has allowed me to overcome industry challenges, foster collaboration, and lead teams toward impactful results,” Varma shared. “For me, project control is more than a profession; it is a mission to deliver value, maintain accountability, and drive meaningful growth.”

Navigating Challenges Without Compromising Integrity

Varma’s track record includes overseeing multi-billion dollar portfolios, applying financial discipline through comprehensive cost forecasting and risk mitigation. His proficiency in Primavera P6, SAP, Excel, and Power BI, combined with deep knowledge in cost estimating, variance analysis, and integrated EVM methodologies, enables him to deliver accurate schedules, progress tracking, and analytics. As his career has progressed, his experience has proven instrumental in navigating stakeholder conflicts and regulatory challenges without compromising project integrity.

In an industry where the stakes are high and the margins for error are slim, Parthiv Varma’s ability to harness technology is a defining strength. By mastering tools like Primavera P6, SAP, EcoSys, Excel, and Power BI, he transforms raw data into strategic insights, streamlines complex workflows, and drives projects toward successful outcomes. His work demonstrates that technology, when combined with expertise, leadership, and vision, is not just a support function — it is a catalyst for excellence.

A Thought Leader in Project Management

Today, Varma has emerged as a thought leader in his field. Currently serving as a Senior Project Control Analyst at Southern California Edison (SCE), he has learned to guide teams, anticipate challenges, and develop adaptable solutions. His unique perspective sets him apart and earned him a nomination for a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Association for Project Management (APM) Project Control Professional of the Year Award in the United Kingdom.

Beyond his operational achievements, Varma contributes regularly to industry discourse through published work on AI applications in cost control and infrastructure risk management, alongside featured interviews discussing technology integration in project environments. He additionally holds PMP certification from the Project Management Institute.

“What truly differentiates my perspective,” Varma said, “is how I integrate change management principles with project controls; recognizing that even the most sophisticated systems fail without stakeholder alignment… My unique value lies in this ability to balance analytical rigor with operational pragmatism.”

Ambition for the Future

Moving forward, Varma recognizes that his industry is rapidly moving toward integrated, data-driven workflows. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), and other automation solutions require key adaptations in project management. Within the next few years, he envisions himself at the forefront of this digital transformation in project controls. He anticipates that by the end of this decade, project controls will function as a comprehensive data-centric practice. He plans to continue sharing insights through future publications and speaking engagements at industry conferences such as PMI and AACE events. Parthiv Varma’s long-term goal is to lead a PMO or project controls organization, driving the evolution toward predictive analytics and automated intelligence in project delivery.
