As one of our readers, @drmangor, wrote over the weekend on Twitter, “On the first day, God made air conditioning.” Several minutes later @ItsRomy posted her followup, “On the second day, God created ice cold beer.” We could not agree more.

While it was tempting to spend the entire weekend locked in our air conditioned apartment, updating Facebook and sipping a cold one… okay, fine, we did during the day… as soon as dusk fell we hit the city and soaked up the colorful L.A. nightlife. This weekend we rocked out on the Sunset Strip, mingled with faeries and goblins at the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball, and sexed-up our inner geek while watching Comic Book Vixens burlesque. Read on for more of what we did and who we saw…

Comic Book Vixens at Bordello

Just in time for Comic-Con, Devil's Playground's July 11 burlesque show featured heroines and villains of the comic book world like Catwoman, the Joker, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, Vampirella and Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. As with Video Game Girls, this event combined geeky with exotic. View more photos in Shannon Cottrell's Comic Book Vixen slideshow and read Liz Ohanesian's West Coast Sound blog, “Comic Book Vixens: Heroines and Villains Get Undressed at Devil's Playground,” to see how the vixens ranked by costume, skills used and execution.

A Friday night on the Sunset Strip always guarantees one thing: rock and roll. On July 10 the Roxy welcomed a triple-threat lineup that featured Bobby Alt and The Terrors (who performed a killer cover of Stone Roses' “I Wanna Be Adored”), The Hammerheads (fronted by actor Anton Yelchin of Star Trek and Terminator Salvation), and Chelsea Girls (L.A.'s smokin' hot “female all-star supercovergroup”). Labyrinth of Jareth, the two-day “Venetian histories and Celtic faerie and goblin lore” masquerade ball was no spectator sport. Now in its 12th year, this year's ball was held July 10 and 11 at the Henry Fonda Theater and if you weren't wearing formal gear or at least a mask, you weren't allowed entrance.
