An apparently raving, naked man jumped into the water in Marina del Rey over the weekend, staying there and evading authorities until giving up because it got too cold.

It happened about 2:25 p.m. Saturday after LAPD officers were trying to detain the guy, said to have run away from a mental-health facility, but he took a dive into the water.

That, authorities said, prompted cops to call for the help of the sheriff's department, which patrols the waters of MDR. Here's your funny quote of the day, from sheriff's Sgt. Jeffrey Olander:

The man, who was naked and had a catheter and IV tube inserted, continued to run from the officers and entered the Marina del Rey unincorporated area.

The dive happened near Tony P's Restaurant in the 4400 block of Admiralty Way, authorities said — just in time for the late-lunch crowd to enjoy the festivities.

The suspect swam between vessels to try to elude cops, but they finally got him, apparently, when it got too cold in the water.

Olander:

The man eventually became cold and tired from the prolonged exposure to the chilly water and climbed onto the swim step of one of the sheriff's patrol boats.

The name of the naked suspect was not released.
