Jimi Hendrix

Electric Ladyland (Reprise)

I’ve been a vinyl junkie since the late ’50s and started buying albums in ’64 . The first was The Kinks’ first album. I queued for an hour to get it at a sale having saved my pocket money. No choccy bars for me, [but rather] 45s and 33s! They last longer. So I’ve got thousands. Best one though? The Faces, Kinks, Beatles, Stones, Who, Doors, Van Morrison, Ramones, Muddy Waters, etc, but I’ll plump for Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix. I remember getting it from a friend whose dad worked for the record company so got it about 2 weeks before general release, and just playing it like crazy to all my mates. Mine had big pics of Noel [Redding] and Mitch [Mitchell], all the other copies I’ve seen are little. Anyway, the variety of music — blues, rock, psychedelic — was just amazing. From that weird intro to the ending on “Voodoo Child (Slight return)”, [it] was brilliant. It’s been on my turntable more than any other album and is the perfect antidote to Sunday morning blues. Let’s face it, the first two Hendrix albums were astounding so to get even better with his third was genius. As we said in the day it blew my mind!

The Vibrators play with Sin City Rejects, GOB Patrol, Anarchy Lace, Brain Anchor and Toxic Energy at 7 pm. on Sunday, September 22 at the Whisky A Go Go.
