Mayor Villaraigosa has chosen Michael LoGrande, the city's current chief zoning administrator, to be director of the Planning Department, the Times reports.

LoGrande replaces Gail Goldberg, who announced her resignation last month.

The department has been hit with budget cuts and the departure of senior planners even as the mayor has sought quicker progress on updating community plans and streamlining the department.

City Council has to confirm.
