The Santa Monica City Council earlier this month voted to approve a jaw-dropping ban of smoking in your own apartment. But on “second reading,” when a final vote was required, the council backed down.
Members forgot to take into consideration the smoking rights of medical marijuana patients. Really.
The ban was to apply to newly built apartments and those that have been vacated. The conversion of all units in the city — condos and apartments — to non-smoking would have eventually been required.
But Tuesday night the council backed off like Snoop Dogg spying a low-quality sack of stress.
According to the Santa Monica Daily Press:
Mayor Richard Bloom switched his earlier vote of support and came out against the ban, saying that he had new concerns about the impact on medical marijuana smokers and the fact that condominium owners had not been included in the process.
Good news for medical users: No justice, no spliff.
The council asked staffers to take into consideration the rights of condo owners and medical pot smokers and come back to it at a later date with recommendations so it can consider once more to ban or not to ban.
