A man who had opened fire outside a Universal CityWalk nightclub was fatally shot by police early this morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Three other people were injured outside Infusion Lounge, but not by gunfire, said L.A. County Fire Department inspector Scott Miller. LAPD Officer Wendy Reyes said the three might have been hurt during a rush to flee the scene.

The shooting was reported …

… at 1:15 a.m., Reyes told us. North Hollywood Division cops were called to the scene based on a report of “a large group disturbance at Universal CityWalk in front of Infusion Lounge,” she said.

“They saw a large group, officers heard gunshots and took cover, they saw a male holding a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Reyes said.

L.A. County Fire Department rescuers responding to a different call were nearby at 1:20 a.m. but then were “staged” away from the scene for safety reasons until police said it was okay to proceed about 10 minutes later, Miller said.

Three bystanders sustained minor injuries while “trying to flee the scene,” Reyes said.

The club was reportedly having a DJ contest before unrest broke out.

Universal CityWalk is patrolled both by the LAPD and the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, Reyes said.

We reached out to both Infusion Lounge and Universal CityWalk but have not heard back.
