Once again, Los Angeles has made a very strong showing in Bon Appetit's Best New Restaurants list, just missing out on Restaurant of the Year (which went to AL’s Place in San Francisco), but taking second and third place. The “Hot 10” list comes two weeks after the 50 best new restaurants were revealed.
The No. 3 spot goes to Petit Trois, the tiny French bistro from Ludo Lefebvre, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo. Bon Appetit restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton writes: “From my seat, I swear I can see the Eiffel Tower. There are half-drunk bottles of Burgundy on the bar and classic French dishes like steak au poivre, escargots and jambon chablisienne on the menu. The s’il vous plaîts and mercis are flying. But I’m not in Paris. I’m in a strip mall in Hollywood.” He goes on to praise the “greatest hits of bistro standards executed at a level that’s nearly impossible to find anymore — even in Paris,” such as the sole meunière, the French onion soup and the escargot.
Gjusta — Venice's spectacular food hall and deli — comes in at No. 2. Knowlton calls it “a California dream come true.” “Think of Gjusta as the modern-day version of the Chocolate Room in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Knowlton writes. “Almost everything here is edible and tempting, so where do you start — with the smoked brisket sandwich or the baklava croissant?”
