A civil lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that alleges a couple used (and then ditched) five orphans to get a house built as part of the storyline of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition could come to an end with a possible settlement this week.
Firipeli and Lokilani Leomiti greed to take the five in after their parents died in 2004; the tragic nature of the quintet's predicament was then allegedly used to convince the show to demolish their home and build them a new one. The couple had known the kids from church. All five siblings were subsequently told to leave the Santa Fe Springs house three months after the show aired, according to the suit.
A lawyer for the children stated that they were open to settling the case, and a judge on Monday scheduled a settlement conference for Friday afternoon. ABC Television was dropped from the suit earlier.
The plaintiffs also allege that the couple made insensitive comments about the siblings black heritage. The brothers and sisters ranged from 14- to 21-years-old when the show aired in 2005.
