Police this week were searching for a missing 13-year-old girl who they fear might have met a male on MySpace and possibly fled with him. The girl's 25-year-old half-sister, Maria Gutierrez, told LA Weekly Wednesday afternoon that the teen had been seeing a man in his 20s, but that police appeared to have ruled him out as a possible lead in the case. On Wednesday afternoon Los Angeles police announced they would hold a 6 p.m. news conference to discuss a possible connection between the case and a Saturday night shooting in which six people, including two “small children,” were injured.
Teenager Karina Valencia was last seen Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at a friend's birthday party in the 13800 block of Polk Street in Sylmar, according to a Los Angeles Police Department statement.
“It is possible that Karina met an unknown male on the popular website, MySpace, and left to meet up with him,” according to the LAPD.
Sister Gutierrez told the Weekly that the girl had two MySpace profiles, one under the name “GR££N £¥£Z,” (which has a URL that ends in “daddysaenzwifey”); the other is listed under “818 Traviesa 818.” Traviesa means mischievous. In both, the sister says, Valencia is self-identified as being 16.
Her GR££N £¥£Z profile indicates someone logged in Wednesday, although that could have been detectives.
Police said she's know to visit Sylmar Park, at Polk Street and Bordon Avenue, and the city library at 14561 Polk in Sylmar.
Valencia is Latina, with long brown hair and, according to her sister, green-blue eyes. She's 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs about 90 pounds. She was last seen wearing black shorts and a white shirt with the word Madonna on it.
Anyone who knows where she might be was asked to call police at 818-838-9800 or anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
