23-Year-Old Woman Dies in Multi-Vehicle Collision near Stapley Drive

MESA, AZ (August 28, 2023) – Wednesday afternoon, a multi-vehicle chain reaction incident claimed the life of Karen Maldonado. The crash took place in the afternoon of August 23nd, near the intersection of Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive. According to the authorities, a red Ford pickup truck was driving at high speeds on Southern Avenue, when he slammed into a curb causing him to enter the intersection of Stapley Drive. There, the Ford struck the side of a silver Chevy, then rear-ended a silver Mazda sedan that was stopped at a red light. The impact of the collision caused the Mazda to careen into the path of other vehicles. It was reported that a total of 8 vehicles were involved in the collision, including a school bus. Emergency crews arrived at the site of the collision shortly after. After assessing the situation, medics pronounced the driver of the Mazda, 23-year-old Karen Maldonado, dead at the scene. Meanwhile, authorities transported the Ford driver to the hospital with an unknown extent of injuries. Police said that the driver of the Ford did not show any signs of impairment, and charges are still pending
