Jocelyn Character Hughes is a single mother, trained physical therapist, and author of Braveheart Woman Rising Above: The Incredible Faith in Perseverance and Forgiveness. After growing up in Cebu, Philippines, she has lived in the United States for the last thirty years, encapsulating her spectacular journey through life in her writing.
Braveheart Woman Rising Above: The Incredible Faith in Perseverance and Forgiveness includes themes of familial and marital abuse, loss, illness, and ultimately, the unwavering hope that motivates her readers not to give up. Jocelyn’s hope is inspired by the trials and triumphs of her life, alongside her committed faith in God. She comments: “It is amazing how faith in God and understanding the power of the subconscious can change any circumstance. Everyone has the power inside of them and through the Lord, they need only to discover Him.”
As a child, Jocelyn was orphaned by the age of five – experiencing abuse at the hands of her aunt. Soon after, she was sold to be married and suffered further abuse in her marital relationship. Despite this, Jocelyn represents a real-life story of faith and perseverance, as she gave birth to four boys whom she raised single-handedly; seeing them through their college education and providing for them financially through her overseas work in the United States.
During her time working as a physical therapist, she was involved in a wheelchair-related accident that left her hospitalized for over three months. During this time, she experienced kidney failure, broken ribs, and an injured lung; yet she remained hopeful in her astonishing recovery that soon came after.
One of the most notable storylines from her book portrays the time in her life when she provided private care for a 94-year-old cancer patient in California. It was during this work that she began studying the effects of nutrition and alternative medicine to heal the sick. In researching proteins, nutrients, vitamins, and herbs, she began producing her own formula that exhibited promising results for her 94-year-old patient, who eventually lived till 100 years old.
Jocelyn’s care for others, despite the lack of care shown to her, displays her brave and faithful journey through life. Her book pays tribute to this, as her astounding ability to forgive those who wronged her, underpins the overall message of the narration. Through sharing her story, she hopes to be a voice for those suffering from similar circumstances and encourage them to speak out about their own struggles. Her book is aimed at the young adult reader and will be followed by a second and third volume to be released soon.
