Jani Lane, lead singer of the hair-metal band Warrant, was found dead inside a Ventura Boulevard hotel room Thursday, the LAPD announced.

TMZ reported that Lane was found at a Comfort Inn. The LAPD said they got a 911 call about a possible death in the 20100 block of Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills at 5:30 p.m.

Paramedics declared the 47-year-old Lane dead at the scene, according to a police statement. Now the question everyone wants the answer for is, How did he go?

They don't know. The investigation is in the hands of the county coroner's office.

Lane penned the strip club anthem “Cherry Pie,” the band's biggest hit.

According to Warrant's Wiki entry the band has sold at least 10 million records and had its greatest success in the early to mid-'90s.

Lane appeared on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club reality show, although he appeared to have battled alcohol problems. TMZ says he had two DUIs in two years, the last one being in 2010.

Update: The Los Angeles Times reports that prescription drugs and alcohol were found in Lane's room and that investigators want to know what he was doing there since he had a home in the South Bay.
