Police this week were on the hunt for a driver who they say intentionally struck a transgender teen on a Monterey Park last weekend.

The 16-year-old victim was said to be in “serious but stable condition,” according to a Monterey Park Police Department statement.

It happened about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 3700 block of Ramona Boulevard, cops said. Reports say the victim was leaving a party at Luminarias restaurant when it happened.

It's not clear if she was struck because she was transgender, which might elevate the case to an alleged hate crime. All police would say is that the teen “was the victim of an assault.”

“At this time there is no suspect information,” the department said in a statement, “nor is there any information regarding the suspect vehicle.”

A sergeant told us detectives were still working on the case this week. He said the victim would not be identified because she's underage.

At a news conference the teen's uncle asked the public for help identifying the driver.

“I don't understand how somebody could just leave a human being on the side of the road and drive off,” he said. “If anyone has information, I beg you, please come forward.”
