Event PickOne of the most significant events celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hola Mexico Film Festival, is the largest fest of its kind, showcasing Mexican cinematic talent for 10 full days of screening events (already underway, it runs thru this weekend). Only in Mexico itself could you find as much focus on these films and the cinema creators who made them. Comedy, drama, horror and documentaries representing Latin perspective and vision in front of and behind the camera, are presented alongside other festivities –live music, parties, competitions and panels– making for a celebratory event both Latinos and non can enjoy; most Spanish language works have subtitles.

For its 14th edition, the event (thrown by Toyota with support from the Hollywood Foreign Press, Warner Media and the DCA) has a lot going on.  The competitive career development program called Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today (TFT) highlights inclusion with emerging filmmakers participating in an intensive program taking place throughout the fest’s run at venues including the Montalban Theater, Regal LA Live Cinemas and LA Plaza de Cultura y Arte.  The young filmmakers’ works will be screened as will alumni from the program including films from Selina Ringel and Jimena Muhlia.

Highlights should include Arturo Ripstein’s El Diablo Entre Las Piernas (Devil Between The Legs), Joaquin Del Paso’s El Hoyo en la Cerca (The Hole in the Fence), Satanic Hispanics (an anthology of five horror shorts) and the big closing night event screening of Enfermo Amor from directors Marco Polo Constandse Cordova and Rodrigo Nava followed by a live musical performance by cumbia queen Amandititita. There will also be some vintage films shown on the Montalban rooftop including La Mujer Murcielago (Batwomen, pictured above) and Sombre Verde.
