Harrowing Scenes from The Most Destructive Fire in Los Angeles County History

The Southland is consumed with fires that have left 24 dead and over 12,000 structures damaged or destroyed, as of time of writing. It’s now deemed the most destructive fire in Los Angeles County history. The Palisades and Eaton fires now rank third and fourth most destructive in state history, respectively.

A dry winter season coupled with hurricane speed Santa Ana winds earlier in the week resulted in several separate fires, some still raging, causing massive evacuations:

Active fires:

• Palisades: Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Santa Monica, Brentwood — 18% contained; 23,713 acres
• Eaton: Altadena, Pasadena and surrounding area — 35% contained; 14,117 acres
• Hurst: Sylmar and surrounding area — 97% contained, 799 acres

Fully contained fires:

• Lidia: Acton and surrounding areas
• Sunset: Runyon Canyon, Hollywood Hills, Hollywood, Los Feliz
• Kenneth: West Hills and surrounding area
