This year marks the 40th anniversary of UTI Crew, one of Los Angeles' most prolific and respected graffiti collectives. Now more than 250 members strong, the crew is redefining itself as the United to Inspire Worldwide Style Writers’ Association, a “support network for underdog, low-income and working-class artists.” “When I think about UTI as a crew, I think about Los Angeles prestige,” says GEL ROC. “A lot of crews are active right now and doing their best to make their mark, but not all of them have that staying power in history like UTI.” MISTER 1987 puts it even more simply: “They're f---ing gangster-type dudes. They don't die out.” We spoke with founding members and longtime artists about the collective’s evolution, its emphasis on mentorship and why respect has always mattered most. As OMEGA says: “Still, to this day, we have the same initiation: craft and conduct. We're very family oriented, community oriented. For three years, Los Angeles electro-pop artist RY

For three years, Los Angeles electro-pop artist RYL0 has been building the world of her debut album “5T4RP0W3R.” Rooted in Greek mythology but centered on her own experiences, the record uses ancient stories to explore identity, personal growth and the relationship between past, present and future. Developed alongside executive producers Taydex and AOBeats, the album became RYL0’s most emotionally complete work yet, embracing both confidence and vulnerability. By the time Kenyon Dixon arrived at “EGO RUINS EVERYTHING,” his new album out today, July 24, he had already built the kind of resume that could justify a victory lap. The Los Angeles singer-songwriter had quietly become one of contemporary R&B’s most respected craftsmen, earning five Grammy nominations. Yet when it came time to make his latest album, Dixon found himself looking inward instead of celebrating outward. “EGO RUINS EVERYTHING is a concept album that’s kind of just a journey through ego and learning how to deal with it,” Dixon tells LA Weekly. “It came from a retrospective place — looking at decisions I made, experiences I’ve had and things I’ve seen other people go through.” Loaded with earworms and built without guest features, the album unfolds like a film, following a protagonist learning to confront his ego before finding redemption in the closing moments. BelicoFest made its Los Angeles debut at BMO Stadium on July 12, drawing more than 17,500 fans for a day dedicated to the continued rise of música mexicana.
