Time for Tea: The Equality Act Extends Civil Rights to LGBTQ People

A little over two months ago, newly elected Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made a promise in her gavel acceptance speech to pass the Equality Act "to end discrimination against LGBTQ Americans." This important legislature would extend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to LGBTQ Americans. Last week, Pelosi made good on her statement when it was officially introduced in the House. Now it's up to Congress....

Time for Tea: LGBTQ on TV at PaleyFest LA

PaleyFest, which kicks off on Friday, March 15, benefits the Paley Center's preservation and archival digitization efforts, and the 2019 lineup shows the increasing representation of LGBTQ characters on TV today with a wide range of programs. We break them down for you here by event date....

Time for Tea: The Personal and Political Conflicts of Being a Jewish Gay Liberal

Last year a wave of young, progressive, equality-minded women was elected to Congress, among them Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota), a refugee from Somalia and the first black female Muslim in Congress. Only a few months after she was sworn into office, she has become polarizing, with the country debating comments she made about Israel, and many people calling them anti-Semitic. The controversy illustrates the internal conflict of being a liberal, open-minded member of the LGBTQ community and being Jewish in today's political climate....

Struggling to Get the Cult of Cats

Since its debut in the early 1980s, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats has become a classic, but a divisive one, with people either loving it or hating it with equal passion. With the musical playing at the Pantages the next few weeks, Angelenos who've never been will have to decide which Cats camp they're in. Our critic wasn't feeling these felines....

Time for Tea: Celebrating LGBTQ Representation at the Oscars

It has been referred to as the "gay Super Bowl," and this year, the Oscars lived up to that label. While the nominees and telecast have been accused of lacking diversity in the recent past, Sunday's presentation of the 91st annual Academy Awards ceremony was just the opposite: On the red carpet, on the stage and in the roles awarded, LGBTQ visibility was front and center this year, and it was pretty awesome....

A Muted Robyn Is Still a Stellar Robyn

Swedish singer Robyn, self-described as the "most killingest pop star on the planet," returned to Los Angeles for her first live concert since she toured with Röyksopp five years ago, and her first solo concert in eight years (both times she headlined the Hollywood Bowl). Appearing at the Hollywood Palladium, the concert was one of the final events in the 2019 Red Bull Music Festival Los Angeles. While the festival may have been reaching its conclusion, Robyn was just rolling in to promote her latest album, Honey....

Time for Tea (for Two): Let's Talk About the RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 4 Finale

On Friday, Feb. 15, one of the most action-packed seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars came to an end with a historic tie. For the first time in Drag Race "herstory" (in both regular and All Stars seasons), two queens were crowned the winners: Monét X Change and Trinity "The Tuck" Taylor, both of whom won a $100,000 grand prize. But not everybody's happy with the double drag victory....

Time for Tea: Why Trump's State of the Union Should Outrage the LGBTQ Community

Last week President Trump gave his State of the Union address to Congress. While the news cycle mostly focused on his hypocritical cry for political unity and bipartisanship (and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's brilliant "clap back" that went viral), it's important to discuss the lack of LGBTQ inclusion as well as Trump's questionable promise to end HIV....

Time for Tea: Jussie Smollett's Attack Reflected MAGA's Hate

It's only been a little over a week since it happened, but with our current news cycle, it's been pushed out of the spotlight. And it shouldn't be. Jussie Smollett's attack may have received more headlines due to his fame, but this kind of racist and homophobic behavior is running rampant in American today, especially living in Trump's America. At the end of last year, the FBI reported that hate crimes had spiked 17 percent across the country. This isn't a coincidence....

Hello, Dolly! and Betty Buckley Are a Perfect Match

It's been a little more than two weeks since the legendary Carol Channing died, but her presence and spirit can unquestionably be felt at Hello, Dolly! on the revival's national tour, which opened last week at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. Broadway legend Betty Buckley takes over the role, and her performance, along with the rest of the cast, the chorus and the production, definitely encompass the essence of the original Broadway show....
